P3R Announces 2025 Pittsburgh Marathon Hall of Fame Inductees
PITTSBURGH – P3R and the Pittsburgh Marathon Hall of Fame Committee proudly announce the 17th class of inductees into the Pittsburgh Marathon Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees—Tom Abbott, Jim Hamilton, Tim Hewitt, and Louis Kushner—will be recognized for their remarkable contributions to the sport and the Pittsburgh running community. The official induction ceremony will take place during the 2025 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
Tom Abbott
Tom Abbott has run more than 116,000 miles over the past 54 years, embodying a lifelong dedication to the sport. A veteran of 62 marathons, he is one of only 18 men to be named a “Perfect Great Racer,” having completed the Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race 10K for an incredible 47 consecutive years. His running journey began at age 17 with his first marathon—a moment he still holds dear. Abbott will participate in this year’s UPMC Health Plan / UPMC Sports Medicine Pittsburgh 5K.
Jim Hamilton
Jim Hamilton is a decorated long-distance runner and passionate coach whose legacy includes both elite performances and decades of mentorship. He raced in multiple Pittsburgh Marathons from 1993 to 2003, consistently finishing in the top 20. His personal best of 2:20:38 came in 1995, the same year he set a course record of 14:24 in the City of Pittsburgh Great Race 5K. A 1996 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier, Hamilton also clocked a sub-4-minute mile (3:57) and posted strong showings in major races like the Chicago Marathon and Cherry Blossom 10-Miler. Today, he coaches cross country and track at West Allegheny and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High Schools, shaping the next generation of runners.
Timothy Hewitt
Timothy Hewitt is an endurance legend known for pushing the limits of human potential. One of the “Sole Survivors”, Hewitt has run every Pittsburgh Marathon since its debut in 1985. He’s a U.S. Masters 100K champion, a winner of multiple marathons and ultra races, and the first American to finish the Badwater Ultramarathon in 2000. As race director, he transformed the Laurel Ultra into one of the nation’s premier trail races. Hewitt co-founded the Pennsylvania Parks and Forest Foundation and has led numerous outdoor conservation initiatives. From hiking the entire Pacific Crest Trail with his wife to biking nonstop from Pittsburgh to D.C. nine times, Hewitt’s journey is fueled by grit, passion, and an unyielding spirit of adventure.
Louis Kushner
Louis Kushner has been a driving force behind the Pittsburgh Marathon’s success for decades. As part of the dedicated group that revived the race in 2009, he played a pivotal role in restoring this community tradition. A seasoned marathoner, Kushner has raced in iconic events around the world—including Athens and Beijing marathons—and proudly ran the Pittsburgh Marathon the same year he helped bring it back. An emeritus member of the P3R Board of Directors, Kushner has helped guide the organization through transformative growth. His favorite part of race weekend? Seeing the energy and excitement of runners ready to take on the challenge together.
