More than 22,000 Join the Ranks of Runners of STEEL at the 2024 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Sunday Races

05.05.24

PITTSBURGH, PA (May 5, 2024) – The DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon races united thousands of runners from around the world today in a celebration of endurance and community spirit, each participant with their own story of personal triumph. As Pittsburgh’s premier celebration of movement and fitness, the marathon’s events showcase the city’s scenic beauty and welcoming atmosphere, standing as a testament to the human spirit’s capability to overcome and achieve.

“Witnessing over 22,000 participants come together to challenge themselves and one another today on the streets of Pittsburgh has been nothing short of inspiring,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “The dedication, resilience, and camaraderie displayed by every runner, walker, and supporter exemplifies what makes this event so special.”

Andrew Bowman, from Mich., broke the finishers' tape in the DICK’S Sporting Goods PIttsburgh Marathon with a time of 2:15:52. His wife, Sydney, won the women’s race in 2018.

“This race and the day has been surreal. It’s hard to put it into words, but I’m so grateful for the opportunity to get to experience the win in such a great city,” Bowman said. “Everything from the crowd support, the race course and the staff that worked so hard to put on this event made it amazing. That and getting to share the moment with my family, especially my wife who was the 2018 marathon champion, again just made this a top moment in my life. Finally, deep respect for all the competitors in our pack today, tough but very friendly and a pleasure to run with.”

Pittsburgher Will Loevner, a graduate of Winchester Thurston High School, finished second with a time of 2:17:38, and 2023 Pittsburgh Marathon champion Tyler McCandless, from Colo., was third with a time of 2:17:46.

In the women’s race, Jane Bareikis from Kenya took home the first place prize of $7,000. Damaris Areba finished second 2:38:34, and Christina Murphy from Ohio finished third 2:43:57.

“For me, winning is a special feeling. Coming here, I was not sure how I would run because I have had a hamstring issue since the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. I am very happy I got to finish and win,” Bareiski said.

In the UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon, Wesley Kiptoo became the first man to win the event three times when he broke the finishers tape in 1:01:31.   “It feels great to be back and run and win. I’m looking forward to coming back next year and improving on my time,” Kiptoo said.

Stephanie Bruce broke the tape on the women’s side. She made her return to Pittsburgh after winning the USA Half Marathon Championships here in 2019. This time she also brought her 8-month-old daughter Sophia.

“Pittsburgh did not disappoint! The crowds at the start were amazing even in the rain, the fans couldn’t be stopped,” Bruce said. “My win here today feels like a great kick off to my postpartum return to racing.”

Runners and walkers from all 50 states and 24 countries accomplished their months-long goal of conquering 26.2 and 13.1 miles and earned their medal today. More than 700 teams took part in the FedEx Pittsburgh Marathon Relay, and more than 200 people took on the brand-new Oxford Athletic Club Pittsburgh 4-Mile Fitness Challenge.

The event will have long-lasting impact beyond race day. A record number of 3,500+ charity runners are expected to raise more than $1.5 million through the Run for a Reason Charity Program presented by KeyBank.
