More than 23,000 Registered Participants Join the Ranks of Runners of STEEL at the 2025 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Sunday Races
PITTSBURGH, PA – The DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events united a record 46,000 runners and walkers from around the world in a celebration of movement and community spirit. The marathon’s events transform Pittsburgh into a festival of fitness during the first weekend of May every year, with neighborhoods coming alive to showcase the city’s hospitality, pride, and iconic bridges that connect both the course and community.
“Whether an athlete pursuing a new goal, first-time finisher, or elite athlete, we welcome you with equal enthusiasm. It's inspiring to see every kind of participant push their limits and achieve greatness on our course,” said Troy Schooley, P3R CEO. “Pittsburgh continues to shine, year after year, as we work to create an unforgettable race weekend for every runner.”
Mulgeta Birhanu Feyissa, of Ethiopia, broke the finishers' tape in the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon with a time of 2:14:31 after a break away around mile 23 from the two-man lead pack that ran most of the race together. Runner-up Milton Rotich, of Kenya, finished not far behind with a time of 2:14:43, while Ian Carter, from Flagstaff, AZ, placed third in 2:18:33.
In the women’s race, Jane Bareikis of Crestwood, IL, took home the first place prize of $7,000 for the second year in a row. She had a strong finishing kick around mile 24 to win the race in 2:36:01, an improvement of approximately 1.5 seconds from last year’s winning time. Aberu Mekuria Zennebe of Ethiopia finished second with a time of 2:37:03, while Megan O’Neil of Rochester, Michigan, finished third in 2:37:30.
“I’m so happy to win back to back! There was fierce competition both years, and I was very grateful to run my best race to defend my title,” says Bareikis. “Thank you to Pittsburgh for having me here again. This course is never easy, but I look forward to returning next year.”
In the UPMC Health Plan Pittsburgh Half Marathon, Dominic Ondoro of Kenya and three-time race champion Wesley Kiptoo, also of Kenya, were part of the lead pack throughout the race. It was a close call between these two at the finish line, with just one one-hundredth of a second separating the athletes. Ondoro finished first with a time of 1:01:47, with Kiptoo coming in second at 1:01:48. Aidan Reed of Boulder, CO, followed closely in third with a time of 1:01:50.
Everlyn Kemobi of Kenya broke the tape on the women’s side to win the $10,000 prize purse. Shaving more than two seconds off last year’s time, she climbed from a third-place finish in 2024 to the top of the podium in 2025. Lilian Chebii, from Kenya, finished in second place with a time of 1:11:38, and Amy Davis Green of Lake Orion, MI, placed third in 1:12:02.
More than 19,000 runners from all 50 states and 24 countries accomplished their goals of conquering 26.2 and 13.1 miles to earn their medals today, while nearly 750 walkers took part in the UPMC Health Plan Half Marathon walking division. Additionally, more than 700 teams split the course as part of the FedEx Pittsburgh Marathon Relay, and more than 250 people completed the GNC Pittsburgh 4-Mile Fitness Challenge.
The impact of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend of Events will extend far beyond race day thanks to the more than 4,000 charity runners who are expected to raise more than $1.5 million through the Run for a Reason Charity Program presented by KeyBank. 2025 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon
