Run for a Reason Charity Program

This year’s DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon charity runners are expected to raise $1.5 million

PITTSBURGH - P3R announced today that the Run for a Reason Charity Program presented by Bank of America surpassed the $10 million fundraising mark since its inception in 2009. Each year the program inspires runners to run for a greater good while raising funds for a cause close to their hearts. This year alone charity runners participating in the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon event are expected to raise more than $1.5 million for 110 local and national charities.

“Congratulations to the charities and charity runners who have worked and trained so hard to hit this impressive milestone,” said Brian Ludwick, Market President for Bank of America Western PA. “Bank of America is thrilled that almost 86% of the $10 million have stayed in the surrounding areas. We are proud to be involved with P3R and the Run for a Reason Program.”

To celebrate this important milestone, Samuel Dalfonson, a charity runner for Team Red, White and Blue who helped P3R cross the $10 million finish line, will receive a Runner Race Weekend VIP Package presented by EZ Pass ($125 value). In addition, the fundraiser’s donor who helped push us over the $10 million mark will receive a $100 DICK’S Sporting Goods gift card.

More than 2,800 charity runners will participate in the 9th DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend of events, scheduled for May 5-7, 2017.

“Our charity runners truly are an inspiration to our community,” said P3R CEO Patrice Matamoros. “They are giving back to the community with every step they take and every dollar they raise. We are so proud of what our charity runners have accomplished since 2009.”

The charities who have received the most donations to-date for 2017 include:

  • Cystic Fibrosis - $77,253
  • Animal Rescue League/Western PA Humane Society - $58,847
  • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital - $45,479
  • Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation - $40,545
