Friends of the Riverfront, owner and beneficiary of the Pittsburgh Triathlon, engages with P3R to produce the 19th edition on August 13-14
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh Marathon organizers, P3R, will produce the 2016 Pittsburgh Triathlon and Adventure Race. The 19th edition is scheduled for Saturday & Sunday, August 13-14 and will feature an adventure race, sprint triathlon and an Olympic-distance triathlon. Proceeds from the event will continue to benefit the work of Friends of the Riverfront in building and maintaining the Three Rivers Heritage Trail.
In an 8-year span, P3R has grown to become one of the preeminent lifestyle brands in Pittsburgh and beyond through its development of the DICK’S Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, EQT Pittsburgh 10 Miler and the GNC Live Well Liberty Mile. In its new venture with Friends of the Riverfront, P3R CEO Patrice Matamoros plans to broaden the nonprofit’s scope of work beyond running.
“We couldn’t be more thrilled to take on the Pittsburgh Triathlon and produce a world class event,” Matamoros said. “Our mission is to provide a top-quality experience from start-to-finish for the participants and spectators. Pittsburgh’s Allegheny is a remarkable venue with an incredible backdrop of the Steel City as well as the home to the Steelers and Pirates. It’s also home to world class competition and we look forward to welcoming world class triathletes!”
“The Pittsburgh Marathon is the gold-standard of events in our region. With direction from the Friends of the Riverfront board of directors to raise the Pittsburgh Triathlon to that level, it made sense to go to the source—P3R. We are certain this year’s Triathlon will be the best ever,” said Thomas E. Baxter IV, executive director of Friends of the Riverfront.
First National Bank will once again serve as Title Sponsor for the event, which is expected to draw more than 800 participants. On Saturday, August 13, the Olympic-distance Triathlon (1500m Swim, 40K Bike and 10K Run) and the Adventure Race (2 mile paddle, 20K bike, 5K run) will occur at Point State Park. On Sunday, August 14, the Sprint Triathlon (600m Swim, 20K Bike, 5K Run) will kickoff at Point State Park.
“At First National Bank, we believe in the power of events like the Pittsburgh Triathlon & Adventure Race to strengthen our community. We are excited to again support the Triathlon and, with the involvement of P3R, to be part of its evolution as a premier event in the region,” said Ronald Donatelli, President of First National Bank’s Pittsburgh Region.
Registration for the Pittsburgh Triathlon & Adventure Race starts at $70 for the Adventure Race, $80 for Sprint Triathlon and $90 for the Olympic-distance Triathlon. For more information or to register, visit: www.PittsburghTriathlon.org.
About Pittsburgh Triathlon & Adventure Race
The Pittsburgh Triathlon was created by Friends of the Riverfront in 1998 as a fundraising event that showcases recreational use of the rivers and trails. The Pittsburgh Triathlon, which is produced by P3R, includes the USA Triathlon-sanctioned bike/run/swim event as well as the Adventure Race, a bike/run/paddle in either a kayak or canoe. A Triathlon Sprint—half the distances of full-length international triathlon competition—also is available to participants. The swim portion of the Triathlon is held in the Allegheny River, assuming conditions of the Friends of the Riverfront River Contact policy are met. The Pittsburgh Triathlon has achieved Green Certification by Athletes for a Fit Planet each year since 2010.
